sunrise movementA major youth climate group that strongly supported President Joe Biden in the 2020 election urged him on Friday to drop out of the 2024 race against former President Donald Trump.
“The risks are too high. We cannot ignore the warning signs before us,” Sunrise Movement executive director Aru Shiney-Ajay said in a statement.
“Joe Biden’s next climate legacy-defining action must be passing the torch to a new nominee,” Heaney-Adjayi said.
Her call for Biden to step down came a day after the president held a news conference to express his determination to stay in the race and the number of Democratic members of Congress who want him to withdraw has grown to nearly 20. Senators publicly called on Biden to drop out of the Democratic presidential race.
“For the sake of our democracy and the future of our planet, we must defeat Trump this November,” Heaney-Ajayi said.
“If Trump wins, he will destroy President Biden’s historic climate achievements, such as the Inflation Reduction Act and the U.S. Climate Corps. Another Trump presidency would be catastrophic and irreversible for our climate damage,” she added.
Heaney-Ajayi noted that 2020 Sunrise Movement volunteers contacted 3.5 million young voters, urging them to vote for Biden instead of Trump.
She said it was “very clear” that the group plans to persuade young voters to support the Democratic nominee, whoever it ends up being.
“With another ticket to energize young volunteers, we can reach twice as many voters this fall,” Heaney-Adjayi said.
