A defense attorney for Donald Trump yelled at prosecution witness Michael Cohen during cross-examination about a 2016 phone call in the former president’s criminal hush-money trial.
Defense attorney Todd Branch asked Cohen to tell him whether Cohen lied during direct examination about his Oct. 24, 2016, phone call to Trump revealing he had gotten porn star Stormy Daniels to agree not to She publicly claimed to have had sex with Trump.
Branch sent a text message to Cohn that day, suggesting that Cohn called then-Trump Organization security director Keith Schiller that night because he was concerned about harassment text messages Cohn received when Trump was running for president that year.
“I believe I also spoke with Mr. Trump about the Stormy Daniels incident,” Cohen told Branch in Manhattan Supreme Court.
Branch then said, “We’re not asking you what you believe.”
“The jury doesn’t want to hear what you think!” Blanche said.
Branch’s dramatic display of emotion followed hours of low-key and sometimes confusing cross-examination of Cohen, who served as Trump’s personal lawyer and fixer for years.
Cohen admitted that he paid Daniels $130,000 before the November 2016 election to keep her quiet about an alleged tryst with Trump a decade ago, lest the report harm Trump’s electoral chances.
He said he did so at the direction of Trump, who is accused in the case of falsifying business records related to his and his company’s reimbursement of Daniels payments to Cohen.
Cohen is expected to be the final witness for prosecutors from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
It’s unclear whether Trump’s lawyers will call any witnesses.
Either way, jurors could begin deliberating the case next week.
Trump, who has denied having sex with Daniels, is the Republican presidential nominee.
