LONDON – Outgoing British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said on Friday he would step down as leader of the Conservative Party following the opposition Labor Party’s landslide victory in Thursday’s national election.

Sunak confirmed he would step down as prime minister and step down as leader of the Conservative Party once formal arrangements are in place to choose a successor.

“This is a difficult day, at the end of many difficult days,” Sunak said in his final speech outside Downing Street. “But I am honored to leave this job to become your Prime Minister.”

Addressing a crowd at 10 Downing Street, Sunak said: “I have given my all to do this job, but you have sent a clear signal that the British government must change and your judgment is the only one important.

“I hear your anger, your discipline, and I take responsibility for this loss to all the conservative candidates and activists who worked tirelessly but without success,” he added.

Sunak was appointed Prime Minister in October 2022, becoming the first British Asian to take office. He held the position for only 20 months.
