New Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday named Rachel Reeves as Britain’s first female finance minister and Angela Rayner as her deputy and began building a team to help him deliver on his promise to rebuild the country.

Reeves, 45, a former Bank of England economist, has spent much of her time working in the opposition to patch up strained relations with the business community under left-wing former Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn and to educate voters. The party can be trusted with their money.

Starmer appointed David Lamy as Britain’s new foreign minister, John Healey as defense secretary and Yvette Cooper as home secretary, the home secretary responsible for overseeing domestic security and policing.

Lamy and Healy took office at a time of two global conflicts and have pledged continued support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and urged a ceasefire in fighting in Gaza.

Starmer promised voters he would bring about change and provide political stability after 14 years in Conservative government.

The appointments to his most senior team are widely expected, with ministers appointed to hold policy briefings during their time in opposition.

Rayner will also serve as secretary for upgrading, housing and communities.

Wes Streeting has been appointed health secretary to oversee Britain’s troubled National Health Service (NHS), one of the biggest issues on voters’ minds ahead of the general election.

Former Labor leader Ed Miliband has been appointed climate and energy secretary, Shabana Mahmoud has been appointed justice minister and Bridget Philipson will become education secretary.
