A deputy U.S. Marshal assigned to protect the homes of Supreme Court justices shot and killed a suspected armed carjacker last week near the Washington home of Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor, authorities said Tuesday.

The suspect, 18-year-old Kentrell Flowers of southeastern D.C., allegedly pulled out of a parked car in the northwest section of the city around 1:15 a.m. Friday. He pointed his pistol at the bailiff. The Metropolitan Police said in a press release.

The police department said the bailiff drew his own gun and “shot the suspect several times.” Another bailiff in another vehicle also shot Flowers, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police recovered a gun from the scene.

The pistol was seized from the attacker.

Flowers was charged with armed carjacking, carrying an unlicensed handgun and possession of a large-capacity ammunition-feeding device, the police department said.

Flowers is charged with attempting to rob a vehicle and assaulting, resisting or impeding certain officers with a dangerous weapon, according to a criminal complaint filed Friday in federal court in Washington, D.C. As of Tuesday afternoon, Flowers did not have an attorney listed on the court docket.

The U.S. Marshals Service did not specifically confirm that the officers were parked outside Sotomayor’s home, but a spokeswoman for the bureau told CNBC that they were “part of a unit that protects the homes of U.S. Supreme Court justices.”

In 2012, Sotomayor bought an apartment The U Street neighborhood in Washington, D.C. is also the same neighborhood where the incident occurred.
