Harris’ arrest comes nearly two years after she pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Manhattan to conspiring to steal Ashley Biden’s diary and sell it to a right-wing media group truth plan The 2020 election is just weeks away.
Harris, 42, was sentenced in April to one month in prison and three months of home detention. She was scheduled to turn herself in at noon on Tuesday to begin serving her sentence.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Manhattan said in a letter to Chief District Judge Laura Taylor Swain on Tuesday night that federal pretrial services notified Harris of Monday’s arrest in McIntosh County, Georgia.
Harris “is charged with multiple counts, including driving on a suspended license, speeding, possession of an open container, possession of marijuana and obstructing a law enforcement officer,” prosecutors wrote in their letter to Swain. “The defendant is currently in state custody on these charges.”
The letter said Harris emailed her pretrial services supervisory officer on Sunday saying she would be taking a “one-day road trip” to South Carolina on Monday and would return Monday evening.
Harris’ attorney, Anthony Checuti, declined to comment on her arrest.
In 2020, Harris temporarily lived at a private residence in Delray, Florida, after Ashley Biden stayed there.
There, court documents say, Harris discovered Ashley Biden’s diary, which contained highly personal material, and a digital memory card belonging to the president’s daughter.
Harris and her admitted co-conspirator, Robert Kurland, first attempted to sell Biden’s personal items to then-President Donald Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign while Trump was campaigning against Joe Biden.
Project Veritas then paid Harris and Kurlander $20,000 each for the items, according to court documents.
Kurland, who like Harris pleaded guilty to federal charges related to theft and sale, will be sentenced by Swain on October 25.
