HSBC The appointment was announced on Wednesday Georges Elhedery serves as Group CEOstarting September 2nd.
Elhedery, currently chief financial officer, will replace outgoing chief executive Noel Quinn in September.
In late April, HSBC unexpectedly announced that Quinn would be leaving the bank after nearly five years at the helm.
Quinn said at the time: “After an intense five years, now is the perfect time for me to achieve a better balance between my personal and business lives. I intend to continue a portfolio career.”
Quinn has led the bank through challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic and trade tensions between China and the West. He has been with the bank for 37 years and was named interim chief executive in 2019.
Elhedery was named chief executive less than two years after being promoted to chief financial officer in January 2023.
HSBC Group Chairman Mark Tucker said: “He is an outstanding leader and banker who cares passionately about the bank, our customers and our people.”
