OpenAI launched a new artificial intelligence model called “GPT-4o mini” on Thursday, the latest effort by the artificial intelligence startup to expand the use of its popular chatbot.

The company calls the new version “the most powerful and cost-effective small model available today” and plans to later integrate images, video and audio into it.

The Mini AI model is a fork of GPT-4o, OpenAI’s fastest and most powerful model to date, which was launched in May during a livestreamed event with senior executives. According to the company, the o in GPT-4o stands for omni. GPT-4o has improved audio, video and text functions and can handle 50 different languages with higher speed and quality.

OpenAI, backed by Microsoft, has been valued by investors at more than $80 billion. The company, founded in 2015, is under pressure to stay at the top of the generative AI market while looking for ways to make money after spending heavily on processors and infrastructure to build and train models.

The mini-AI model announced Thursday is part of OpenAI’s efforts to be at the forefront of “multimodality,” the ability to provide multiple types of AI-generated media such as text, images, audio and video within a single tool: Chat GPT.

Last year, OpenAI chief operating officer Brad Lightcap told CNBC, “The world is multimodal. If you think about the way we as humans process and interact with the world, what we see, what we hear, what we say Stuff — the world is multimodal. “So to us, text and code always feel incomplete as a single mode, a single interface, because we can have the power and functionality of those models. “

GPT-4o mini will be available to ChatGPT free users and ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers starting Thursday, and will be available to ChatGPT Enterprise users next week, the company said in a press release.
