Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Calif., spoke with President Joe Biden on Saturday about the fallout from his disastrous debate performance against former President Donald Trump, according to a person with direct knowledge of the matter. How this damaged his political legacy.
A day later, Biden announced on social media that he was withdrawing from the race and endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris.
Sources described the call between the two as “cordial,” and it was unclear whether the two spoke on Sunday, the same day Biden decided to drop out of the race. The source was granted anonymity in order to speak freely about private conversations.
Press representatives for Pelosi and Biden did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Pelosi’s spokesperson told CNBC after the report was published, “This is not true. Speaker Pelosi has not spoken to the president since leaving Washington more than a week ago.”
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., spoke with Biden this afternoon, NBC News reported.
At 1:45 p.m. on Sunday, Biden told his senior team that he had changed his decision to stay in the race, according to sources who spoke to NBC News. Biden has previously said he has no plans to withdraw from the race, despite calls from House and Senate Democrats for him to do so.
Pelosi issued a statement praising Biden after he dropped out of the race.
“His legacy of vision, values and leadership have made him one of the most influential presidents in American history,” Pelosi said Sunday. “With love and gratitude, President Biden remains committed to America’s promise, And provide people with opportunities to realize their dreams.”
For Pelosi, the call comes after former House Speaker It is said Biden has told Biden that polling since his debate with Trump shows he can’t defeat the former president and that if he continues to run, it could destroy Democrats’ chances of winning the House in November.
