Vice President Kamala Harris makes her debut TikTok account on Thursday highlighted the importance of social broadcast apps to the 2024 presidential campaign as a way to reach voters.
In her first short TikTok video, Harris described her reasons for joining the popular app, saying she “heard I was on the For You page recently, so I thought I’d get on board myself.”
The vice president was referring to the widespread attention her recently announced presidential campaign has generated on social media platforms such as TikTok. For example, many TikTok users have created a large group of humorous video — Contains fusion clips Charli XCX’s “Brat” Summer TRENDING – Harris is the theme to celebrate her emergence as the Democratic Party’s leading presidential candidate following President Joe Biden’s recent announcement that he is dropping out of the 2024 presidential race.
Harris’ rapid adoption of TikTok stands in stark contrast to President Joe Biden, who appeared with Harris in person at the campaign’s @BidenHQ (now @kamalaHQ) Page. U.S. lawmakers have expressed concerns about a Chinese technology company’s ownership of TikTok.
TikTok’s popularity among young Americans and the public at large has made the app an important campaign tool for politicians, although the company does not allow political advertising.
Meanwhile, former President Donald Trump launched an official TikTok account in June. Earlier this year, Trump told CNBC that while he also had national security and privacy concerns about TikTok, he believed banning the app would only “make Facebook bigger, and I think Facebook is the enemy of the people.”
