A plane carrying 62 people crashed on Friday after a fire broke out in a residential area of a city in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, the airline said, but it was unclear how many people were injured or killed.
VoePass airline confirmed in a statement that a plane bound for Guarulhos International Airport in Sao Paulo crashed in the city of Vinedo with 58 passengers and four crew members on board. The statement did not specify the cause of the accident.
Sharing the news at an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence. He said it appeared that all passengers and crew on board were dead, but did not elaborate on how the information was obtained.
Firefighters, gendarmes and civil protection authorities sent teams to the crash site in Vignedo.
Footage broadcast by Brazilian television network GloboNews showed a large area of fire and smoke billowing from an apparent plane fuselage in a residential area filled with houses. Other footage from Global News showed a plane drifting vertically downward, spiraling as it fell.
