OpenAI, the company behind the ChatGPT chatbot, was founded in 2015 by several researchers, academics, and entrepreneurs including Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and Elon Musk.
Altman and Brockman remain at OpenAI, serving as CEO and president, respectively. Musk resigned in 2018. Teslawhich is increasingly focusing on artificial intelligence. In the years since, OpenAI has grown into one of the preeminent leaders in artificial intelligence development.
OpenAI gained popularity in late 2022 after releasing ChatGPT, a chatbot that can answer user questions in a human-like manner. The company also has tools that can generate images and videos based on text prompts. OpenAI currently has annual revenue of $3.4 billion, according to reports, and has high-profile clients such as PricewaterhouseCoopers, Moderna and Estee Lauder. Microsoft has invested approximately $13 billion in the artificial intelligence startup.
