Australia and Indonesia have reached a treaty-level defense cooperation agreement that allows Australian and Indonesian militaries to operate in each other’s countries, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Tuesday.
“This will be an important pillar for our two countries to support each other’s security, which is vital to both countries and to the stability of our shared region,” Albanese said at a joint press conference with Indonesia’s president-elect in Canberra. It’s important.
Australia and Indonesia share the world’s longest maritime border and have cooperated on many issues including security, human trafficking and drug smuggling.
Australian Defense Minister Richard Marlers said: “This map does determine that Australia and Indonesia share a common destiny as our closest neighbors, but from this moment on, that destiny depends largely on the deep strategic trust.
Australia has struck a number of defense deals in recent years, most notably the AUKUS military alliance with the United States and Britain, a move that has angered China.
Prabowo said at the forum last November that Indonesia pursues a non-alignment policy and is willing to maintain good relations with China and the United States.
