United Airlines Plans to launch flights to Marrakech, Morocco and Medellin, Colombia, and increase service to Asia are the airline’s latest bets that consumers will continue to pay to travel abroad.
Flights from United’s hub in Newark, New Jersey, to Marrakech are scheduled to begin on October 24 boeing company 767-300ER. Flights from Houston to Medellin are scheduled to begin on Oct. 27, using Boeing 737 aircraft, the airline said Thursday. The airline also operates year-round flights from Tokyo Narita Airport to Cebu, Philippines.
“Our business in these three cities is premium leisure,” Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of network planning and alliances, told CNBC. “We’re seeing strong demand for business class, with people buying business class and premium select class. There is a strong correlation with flight distance.”
Revenue from foreign travel is outpacing domestic sales as U.S. airlines increase international service due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the last four months of 2023, United’s international revenue grew 18%, while domestic ticket sales grew less than 7%.
United Airlines also said that starting from August 29, it will provide four flights per week between Shanghai and Los Angeles.
It has also added a second daily flight between Los Angeles and Hong Kong, and starting on October 25, there will be a second daily flight between San Francisco and Seoul, South Korea, and between Newark and Porto, Portugal.
