Gotham Advanced Media and Entertainment, a joint venture between MSG Networks and YES Network, will launch a new bundled app in the fall that will broadcast local games for seven New York-area teams.
The package announced Wednesday is believed to be the first time two regional sports networks have combined their apps into a single bundle.
The Gotham Sports app will be available on NBA and NHL seasons. Locals can subscribe to watch the New York Knicks, New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabers, Brooklyn Nets and New York Yankees games.
The Gotham plan that provides access to all this team costs $359.99 per year or $41.99 per month, which is almost as much fox, disney and Warner Bros. DiscoveryThe United Venu streaming service was blocked earlier this month with a temporary ban.
Customers who watch only some of these teams can also purchase just the MSG+ or YES App services, which cost $29.99 and $24.99 per month respectively. If they already have MSG Networks and YES Network through a pay TV subscription, they will get access to the Gotham Sports App at no additional cost.
“As the media that carry the sports fans love becomes increasingly fragmented, the Gotham Sports app provides fans of our teams with an easy way to access MSG Networks and YES Network New York-area sports,” said Andrea Greenberg, president and CEO of MSG Networks. .
Notably, SportsNet New York, the regional sports network that broadcasts the New York Mets, is not included in the venture. Premium cable subscribers can only access the service through FuboTV, DirecTV streaming and online login.
Sterling Entertainment Enterprises, Comcast and Charter Co-owns New York Sports Network.
The regional sports network business has changed dramatically in recent years. Boston’s local cable network, which airs Red Sox and Bruins games, launched its first standalone regional streaming service in 2022, with other markets following suit.
Diamond Sports Group, the largest owner of regional sports networks, filed for bankruptcy in March 2023, leading many of the league’s professional teams to change the way games are broadcast.
A handful of NBA, WNBA and NHL teams have turned to local broadcasters, the most recent examples being the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans and Dallas Mavericks.
Some MLB teams choose to have their games produced by the league.
The Gotham Sports app isn’t the first regional sports streaming option available to residents of the greater New York area. YES Network and MSG Networks both launched standalone streaming services last year, and customers who want just one of the network services rather than a combo package can still pay cheaper rates.
Not all new regional sports streaming services follow a subscription model. NHL’s dallas stars and anaheim ducks Both companies announced that their games will be streamed natively on Victory+, A Parent Media Co.’s free, ad-supported streaming service.
Previously, local matches between the two teams were broadcast by Diamond Sports’ regional sports network.
