The Biden administration will announce actions on Wednesday targeting Russian government-backed efforts to manipulate U.S. public opinion ahead of the 2024 election, two senior U.S. officials told NBC News.
Officials said the alleged efforts included using RT, a Russian-backed English-language media network, to influence public opinion in the United States.
The Biden administration’s actions against these efforts are expected to include sanctions from the U.S. Treasury Department and enforcement actions from the Justice Department.
Attorney General Merrick Garland plans to speak publicly about the operation later Wednesday.
In July, U.S. intelligence officials told NBC News that Russia was trying to undermine President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign this fall.
Weeks later, Biden dropped out of the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to succeed him as the Democratic nominee.
Harris will face Republican nominee and former President Donald Trump in November.
Trump was elected to the White House in 2016.
The RT press office told NBC when asked about news of Wednesday’s expected action, writing: 1. Ha! 2. Hahahaha! 3. Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha.
“4. With 2016 behind us, it wants to return to clichés,” the press office said. “5. Three things are certain in life: death, taxes, and Russia Today’s interference in the U.S. election. 6. We have to earn the Kremlin’s salary somehow. 7. Secretary Clinton somewhere Place feels sad because it’s not because of her.
