President Joe Biden’s reelection campaign released a new digital ad on Monday targeting Donald Trump over comments the former president made on CNBC about cutting government programs such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid.
Biden campaign gives CNBC first look at new policy 20 seconds ad Emphasizing Trump’s statement on “Squawk Box”, as the Republican presidential candidate, Trump is expected to face Biden in the November election.
The campaign said the ad will be posted on Biden’s X, Facebook, Instagram and Threads social media accounts.
In an interview on Monday, CNBC host Joe Kernen asked Trump if he had changed his mind about “how to handle benefits like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?”
Kernan’s question was based on concerns that these programs, if not curtailed, will continue to contribute to the increase in the U.S. national debt.
“There’s a lot you can do about benefits, about cuts, and about theft and mismanagement of benefits,” Trump responded.
The Biden campaign highlighted the response with a clip from the president’s State of the Union address on Thursday, when he said: “If anyone here tries to cut Social Security or Medicare or raise the retirement age, I’m going to stop you.”
The ad is part of a series of responses by Biden and his campaign to interviews with Trump, who have since seized the opportunity to attack Republicans for proposing cuts to programs that benefit more than 150 million Americans, many of them older voters.
Biden’s campaign first tweeted a clip of Trump’s interview and Biden’s official X account, then responded, “Not on my watch.”
“Even this morning, Donald Trump said plans to cut Social Security and Medicare were once again on the table,” Biden said late Monday at a campaign event in New Hampshire.
“The bottom line is, he’s still working hard,” Biden said. “I will never allow this to happen. I will not cut Social Security. I will not cut Medicare.”
White House spokesman Andrew Bates issued a separate statement emphasizing the president’s commitment to protecting the program.
Meanwhile, Trump’s team tried to explain his “Squawk Box” comments on Monday.
“If you losers didn’t answer his questions briefly, you’d know President Trump is talking about reducing waste,” the Trump campaign said in response to the Biden campaign’s tweet about the former president’s video.
