Donald Trump said on Monday that his administration would not use regulators to crack down on the use of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies if he is re-elected as president.
“I see this technology being used a lot,” Trump said of digital currencies in an interview on CNBC’s “Squawk Box.”
“I’m not sure I want to take it away now,” he added.
Republican presidential candidate Trump describes himself as a currency traditionalist who “used to say, ‘I want a currency, and I want the dollar. I don’t want people to leave the dollar.'”
But he added that when he recently launched a line of expensive Trump-branded sneakers, “I noticed a lot of them were being paid for in this new currency… you know, cryptocurrency, and I just couldn’t believe the number. “
Asked if he himself had purchased Bitcoin, Trump responded: “No, no, no, but I sometimes let people pay in Bitcoin.”
