Republican candidate Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week.
In his first public appearance since Sunday’s apparent assassination attempt, Trump said Modi was “great” but also called India a “very big abuser” as he criticized several countries over U.S. trade policies
“India is a very big abuser, and he happens to be coming to see me next week, and Modi, he’s great,” Trump said at a town hall in Flint, Michigan. “I mean, great, man. “A lot of these leaders are great… you know the expression, they are at the top of their game and they use it against us. But India is very tough.”
Trump did not provide further details about the meeting.
As president, Trump visited India in 2020 and vowed to strengthen trade relations between the two countries. The United States is currently India’s second largest trading partner, after China.
Modi is scheduled to visit the United States from September 21 to 23 and attend the fourth Four-Nation Leaders’ Summit hosted by US President Biden in Wilmington, Delaware. So is the Prime Minister of India Book to attend and speak before the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
This will be Modi’s first visit to the United States since winning a historic third term in June.
During Modi’s state visit to Washington in June 2023, the United States and India signed a series of technology and defense agreements, marking a new era in bilateral relations.
Since then, cooperation between the two countries has continued to deepen.
