Tesla launched “Cybercab” on October 10, 2024 in Burbank, California.

After a decade of unfulfilled promises of self-driving cars, Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk touted the company’s Cybercab concept Thursday night, showing off a low-slung silver two-seater without a steering wheel or pedals.

Nearly an hour after the company’s “We, Robots” event was scheduled to begin, Musk took to the stage in a Cybercab, saying the company has 21 such vehicles and a total of 50 “autonomous vehicles” at Warner Bros. Driving” the car is located at Brother’s studio in Burbank, California, where Tesla held invitation-only events.

Musk did not reveal specific details about where Tesla plans to build the cars, but said consumers will be able to purchase a Tesla Cybercab for under $30,000. He said the company hopes to produce Cybercab by 2027

He also said that Tesla is expected to install and run “unsupervised FSD” on Model 3 and Model Y electric vehicles in Texas and California next year.

FSD, which stands for Full Self-Driving, is Tesla’s advanced driver assistance system, and a “supervised” version is now available for Tesla electric vehicles. FSD currently requires a human driver to drive, ready to steer or brake at a moment’s notice. Earlier this year, Tesla added the word “oversight” to its product names.

“This is going to be a brilliant future,” Musk said Thursday night.

Musk also revealed plans to produce a self-driving electric Robovan that can carry up to 20 people or be used to transport goods. He said it would “solve high-density issues” such as transporting a sports team.

He said that Cybercab and Robovan will use inductive charging, which means these self-driving cars can be driven to a charging station to charge without having to plug into a power source.

Musk has been touting Tesla’s work on self-driving cars for years and promising they would hit the market. Along the way, he repeatedly weaved a fantastic vision for shareholders and set and missed his own deadlines.

In 2015, Musk told shareholders that Tesla cars would be “fully autonomous” within three years. They don’t. In 2016, Musk said that by the end of 2017, Tesla vehicles would be able to drive off-road without any human intervention. In 2019, during a conference call with institutional investors that helped him raise more than $2 billion in funding, Musk said Tesla would have 1 million robotaxi-equipped vehicles on the road by 2020, with each vehicle driving 1 million people a week Able to complete 100 hours of driving work, this makes money for their owners.

In April, Musk was still telling investors that autonomy was the future of the company.

“If there are people who don’t believe Tesla is going to solve the self-driving problem, I don’t think they should be an investor in the company,” he said on a conference call with analysts. “We will, and we do. “

At Thursday night’s event, which Musk previously described as a “product launch,” he welcomed attendees to a “party” and said they would be able to test drive self-driving cars live in a closed environment at the movie studio. a lot of.

This is the first product launched by Tesla since it first showed off the Cybertruck design in 2019.
