International Business Machines Corporation On Tuesday, the company told employees in its marketing and communications departments that it was laying off employees, people familiar with the matter said.
IBM Chief Communications Officer Jonathan Adashek made the announcement during a roughly seven-minute meeting with the unit’s employees, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the information has not yet been made public.
The company did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
In December, IBM CEO Arvind Krishna told CNBC that the company was “massively improving the AI skills of all employees” after announcing plans in August to replace nearly 8,000 jobs with AI. IBM said on an earnings call last January that it would cut 3,900 jobs.
The latest layoffs come amid another round of layoffs in the tech industry. Some 204 technology companies have laid off nearly 50,000 people so far this year, according to the Layoffs.fyi website. January was the busiest month for layoffs since March, with Alphabet, Amazon and Unity all announcing layoffs.
