English football giants Manchester United on Friday Confirmed Shortly after sacking Erik ten Hag, Ruben Amorim was appointed as their new head coach.
In a statement on the club’s website, United said they were “delighted” to welcome the 39-year-old Portuguese manager as head coach, subject to visa requirements.
Amorim is expected to take charge of Manchester United’s men’s first team from November 11, with a contract that will keep him at the club until at least June 2027.
“Ruben is one of the most exciting and highly rated young managers in European football,” United said in a statement.
The club added: “He has received high honors both as a player and as a coach, including winning two La Liga titles with Sporting CP; the first of which was the club’s first in 19 years.”
Interim head coach Ruud van Nistelrooy is expected to continue in his role until Amorim joins the club.
Amorim is considered one of the most popular young football coaches in Europe. His Sporting Lisbon side have won all nine of their games in Portugal’s top flight, conceding just two goals.
In stark contrast, Manchester United have experienced a poor start to the Premier League. The club currently ranks 14th, 12 points behind league leaders Manchester City and seven points above the relegation zone.
United’s poor form prompted the board to sack Ten Hag as head coach earlier this week.
United shares, which are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, rose 1.8% in pre-market trading.
Manchester United is widely regarded as one of the most popular and successful sports teams in the world, but the storied club has gone through a difficult time in recent years.
The club, which holds the record for most Premier League titles with 13, has not won the top domestic title since the departure of manager Alex Ferguson in 2013.
