British police said on Friday that there were initial indications that a suspicious package left outside the U.S. Embassy in London was a hoax device that was blown up in a controlled explosion.
Police earlier carried out a controlled explosion near the embassy building, a 12-storey purpose-built glass cube in Nine Elms, south London, and cordoned off areas.
The embassy subsequently resumed normal operations.
London’s Metropolitan Police said: “Initial indications are that the item was a hoax device. “An investigation will now take place.”
“Some cordons will remain in place for the time being but the majority of the police response will now cease.”
The embassy said it has resumed normal business operations, but all public appointments for Friday have been cancelled.

“Local authorities investigated and cleared a suspicious package outside the embassy,” the statement added.
In 2018, the United States moved its embassy from Mayfair in central London to Nine Elms, partly for safety and security reasons.
This former industrial area now houses dozens of high-end apartment buildings next to Battersea Power Station, a 1930s building known for its red bricks and white chimneys that has been redeveloped into shopping and tourist centers.
