Jimmy Donaldson, also known as “MrBeast” on the Internet, announced on Monday that he has signed a contract with Amazon MGM Studios aims to further blur the lines between YouTube and traditional television.
The new series “Beast Games” is billed as “the largest reality competition series ever” and will see 1,000 contestants vying for a $5 million cash prize.
Donaldson is the most followed individual creator on YouTube, with more than 389 million subscribers across all channels, and the fourth most followed creator on TikTok. His large-scale productions on YouTube rival those produced by professional television production companies, with large crews, highly developed sets and generous cash prizes.Donaldson’s past films include Trapping Yourself in Solitary confinement for 7 daystrying to destroy a Lamborghini and train and running His own version of the Squidward game.
donaldson says in interview On the podcast “The Colin and Samir Show,” his videos on YouTube cost between $4 million and $5 million per video, and the budget for the new show will be higher.news media parker estimated The deal between Donaldson and Amazon is worth about $100 million.
“It’s just like our regular video, but 20 times better,” Donaldson said on the podcast. “Money is not a limitation on gigs. So I can do anything, too, which is a lot more freeing and exciting than you think.”
Donaldson said working with the streaming service allowed him to move away from algorithms and values that perform better on YouTube, such as thumbnails, video length and titles. However, each MrBeast title has between 300 million and 500 million net views, and according to Amazon, there are only 80 million active Amazon Prime Video households in the United States.
Beast Games isn’t the first time creators have produced content for streaming services, and the news is part of a trend of creators expanding their content beyond social media platforms to diversify their income. For example, the YouTube group “Sidemen” released a Netflix documentary earlier this year, and the family of TikToker Charli D’Amelio just aired the third season of their reality show on Hulu.
“We’re reinventing everything,” Donaldson said on the podcast. “It’s probably going to be over six hours of content, whereas my normal movie is only 20 minutes long. The characterization, the storytelling is going to be fantastic compared to our normal movies.”
