An outbreak of mpox occurred on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, in the town of Kavumu, Kabare County, South Kivu region, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The World Health Organization said on Friday it was deploying experts to support health authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo investigating an undiagnosed disease in remote areas of the country.

WHO experts are on their way to Panzi, in the southwestern province of Kwango, where they will provide essential medicines and diagnostic kits to help analyze the cause of the disease, which local authorities say caused the outbreak in November. 143 people died.

The World Health Organization said laboratory tests were underway to determine the cause, adding that more information would be shared as soon as it became available.
