Luigi Mangione may be extradited to New York to face murder charges in the death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
“This is completely out of touch and an insult to the American people and their lived experience!” Mangione shouted as he was shackled from a police car to the Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg.
The 26-year-old man struggled to break free from the police’s grasp and was forced into the building by two officers while yelling at the television cameras. His chest bounced off the building’s walls before he was pushed forward.
During a hearing on Tuesday, Mangione refused to waive his right to challenge his extradition to New York City, where the Penn State graduate is accused in Manhattan Supreme Court of shooting Thompson outside the Hilton Hotel in downtown Manhattan on Wednesday. The CEO is on his way to the parent company for an investor meeting, UnitedHealth Group.
A judge denied Mangione bail, and he will be returned to a Pennsylvania prison to await the outcome of extradition proceedings.
Mangione was arrested Monday morning at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., where local police confirmed he was a suspect wanted by the New York Police Department.
Altoona police found his 3D-printed pistol and silencer in his backpack, along with a forged ID, and he was taken into custody for possession of the 3D-printed pistol and silencer.
