this FBI and Department of Homeland Security An ongoing investigation into reported drone sightings over New Jersey has found that “many of the reported drone sightings are actually manned aircraft mistaken for drones,” the agency said Saturday.
The investigation has not found any evidence that the drones found were involved in illegal activity or malicious behavior, and the U.S. Coast Guard has found no evidence of foreign involvement offshore.
“At this time, we have found no basis to believe that these drones were involved in any criminal activity, present any national security threat, represent any specific public safety threat, or represent a malicious foreign actor,” DHS officials said.
Since mid-November, the FBI has been investigating hundreds of reports of drones operating at night, most of which are larger than those used by hobbyists.
FBI officials said Thursday that the drone sighting “posed a threat to national security or public safety.”
Sightings have occurred at a Bedminster, New Jersey, golf course owned by President-elect Donald Trump, as well as near a military research facility.
