Leading House Republicans said Thursday afternoon they had reached a short-term government funding deal aimed at averting a government shutdown that began late Friday night.
Representatives including Rep. Tom Cole, R-Okla., chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, walked out of House Speaker Mike Johnson’s office in the Capitol and told reporters a deal had been reached.
“We have an agreement and we want to have a vote,” Kerr said, according to NBC News. Kerr did not provide further details about the deal.
The announcement capped a chaotic day of negotiations and noise on Capitol Hill as Republicans struggled to salvage a massive, carefully negotiated spending package so it could pass the Republican-controlled House of Representatives and the Democratic-controlled Senate.
But the deal collapsed after harsh criticism from President-elect Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk.
