Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh died on Tuesday at the age of 92, prompting an outpouring of condolences and tributes from political leaders from both parties and industry giants.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi calls Singh one of India’s “most outstanding leaders” in a speech postal 10. The Bharatiya Janata Party led by Modi defeated the Congress alliance led by Singh in the 2014 election and has been in power since then.
Modi added that Singh was a “respected economist” who had left a “deep imprint” on India’s economic policies.
Before becoming prime minister in 2004, Singh served as governor of the Reserve Bank of India in 1982 and as finance minister in 1991.
As finance minister, he led a series of reforms that deregulated the Indian economy and opened it up to foreign investment.
Faced with a severe balance of payments crisis, then Prime Ministers PV Narasimha Rao and Manmohan Singh liberalized the economy, paving the way for rapid economic expansion in the following decades.
“History will always remember him for the pivotal role he played in the 1991 reforms that reshaped India and opened its doors to the world.” Wrote Gautam Adani, India’s second richest man and chairman of the Indian conglomerate Adani Group.
In 2004, Singh returned to politics. The Congress-led alliance won a landslide in the election, and party leader Sonia Gandhi appointed him prime minister.
India’s gross domestic product initially grew rapidly during his tenure from 2004 to 2014, allowing Singh to deploy the new wealth into projects such as National Rural Employment Security Lawensuring employment for the poor.
However, Singh’s later years as prime minister were marred by sluggish economic growth, stalled reforms and accusations of corruption among some members of his government.
