According to Yonhap News Agency, a passenger plane overshot the runway and hit a wall at South Korea’s Muan International Airport on Sunday, killing at least 28 people.
The report stated that when the accident occurred, Jeju Air flight 7C2216, carrying 175 passengers and 6 crew members, took off from Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, and landed at the airport in the south of the country.
Muan fire officials said the two were found alive and rescue operations were ongoing. The official could not confirm reports of 28 deaths.
An airport official told Reuters authorities were working to rescue those at the tail end of the plane.
Footage shared by local media showed the twin-engine plane taxiing along the runway with no visible landing gear before hitting a wall in an explosion of flames and debris. Other photos showed smoke and flames engulfing parts of the plane.
Aviation tracking website FlightRadar24 said the plane appeared to be a Boeing 737-800. Boeing did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The Federal Aviation Administration did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Acting South Korean President Choi Sang-mok, who was appointed interim leader of the country on Friday after he was impeached amid an ongoing political crisis, has ordered an all-out rescue effort, his office said.
His chief of staff called an emergency meeting.
A spokesman for Jeju Air said the airline was checking the reports.
