Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Sunday that the passenger plane that crashed in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people, was damaged by Russian ground gunfire, Azerbaijani state television reported.
Aliyev said he regretted that “some circles” in Russia were trying to cover up the truth about the Azerbaijan Airlines crash by spreading false narratives about the cause of the crash.
Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to Aliyev on Saturday for what the Kremlin called a “tragic incident” in Russia in which an Azerbaijan Airlines plane crashed after Russian air defenses fired on a Ukrainian drone.
