Police arrested a man who tried to enter the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday carrying a machete and three knives as sitting President Jimmy Carter lay inside.
The arrest came hours before President-elect Donald Trump was scheduled to visit the Capitol to pay tribute to Carter and meet with Republican senators.
Police stopped the unidentified man after they discovered a machete in his bag during an X-ray at the Capitol Visitor Center just after 2 p.m. ET.
Police said they also found three knives in the bag.
Authorities said the man was arrested on multiple charges including carrying a dangerous weapon.
It was unclear why the man came to the Capitol.
Visits for Carter, who died on December 29 at the age of 100, began Tuesday in the Capitol Rotunda. His casket will remain there until his funeral on Thursday at Washington National Cathedral.
Starting Tuesday night, the public was allowed to come to the Capitol to pay their respects to the 39th president.
Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated on January 20.
President Joe Biden flew back to Washington, D.C., from Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon, where he attended a briefing with California Gov. Gavin Newsom on the devastating wildfires still burning through large swaths of the city.
Biden is scheduled to deliver Carter’s eulogy at Thursday’s funeral.
