Microsoft On Wednesday, the company announced the launch of Copilot Assistant for enterprise users with a consumption-based pricing model. The new Microsoft 365 Copilot chat option is an alternative to Microsoft 365 Copilot that organizations can pay based on the number of employees who have access to it.

Jared Spataro, chief marketing officer of Microsoft AI, said in an interview with CNBC this week that Copilot Chat can become the entrance to Microsoft 365 Copilot, with a low barrier to entry. Both products rely on Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s artificial intelligence model.

Copilot Chat can obtain information from the Internet and summarize the text in uploaded files, and those who use it can create agents that perform tasks in the background. It can enrich answers with information from customer files and third-party sources.

Unlike Microsoft 365 Copilot, Copilot Chat cannot be found in Office applications such as Word and Excel. Starting today, people can access Copilot Chat in the Microsoft 365 Copilot app for Windows, Android, and iOS. The application was formerly known as Microsoft 365 (Office). A spokesman said the service is also available through the m365copilot.com website.

Some management teams are refusing to pay Microsoft to offer 365 Copilot to thousands of employees because they’re not sure how helpful the $30 per month price will be. The cost of Copilot Chat will vary depending on what employees use it for, but at least organizations won’t end up paying for non-use.

“As one customer said to me, this model allows the business value to prove itself,” Spataro said.

Microsoft calculates the cost of Co-Pilot Chat based on the “message” count used by customers. According to one blog post, each “message” costs a penny. Responses using client-specific files cost 30 “messages” each. Each action performed by an agent on behalf of an employee costs 25 Messages.

“We’re talking 1 cent, 2 cents, 30 cents, and it’s a very easy way for people to get started,” Spataro said.

Chief Executive Satya Nadella said in October that the number of people using Microsoft 365 Copilot daily had more than doubled from the previous quarter, but he did not disclose how many people were using it.
