Nintendo The long-awaited new Switch 2 hybrid will arrive this year with a larger screen and controller, the company said on Thursday as it looks to inject new life into its struggling hardware business.
The company showed off the Switch 2 in the film’s trailer. The clip begins by showing off the current version of the console, before the two “joy-con” controllers are detached to expand the size of the tablet they’re attached to. The video then shows the Joy Cons growing in size and turning matte black.
The joysticks and controller covers are available in light blue or red. When removed from the Switch 2’s main tablet, the Joy Con case appears to magnetically attach to the controller when the console is propped up on a stand or played through a home TV.
The Switch 2 also features an improved U-shaped stand that can be placed further back, until the console is almost flat on the surface. The device looks similar to the model leaked online ahead of the Switch 2’s official release.
Nintendo did not reveal a release date for the Switch 2, but said it would reveal more details at its next “Nintendo Direct” online event on April 2. Play older Switch games on the model.
Nintendo hopes the Switch 2 can help boost console sales. The current-generation Switch was released back in March 2017 and has now reached the end of its lifespan of nearly eight years. Most console manufacturers tend to wait around six to seven years before replacing a new model.
Nintendo’s September quarter net profit was 27.7 billion yen ($178.2 million), a year-on-year decrease of approximately 69%. The company’s revenue fell 17% year-on-year to 276.7 billion yen.
