apple Apple produced $14 billion worth of iPhones in India last fiscal year, a sign of the company’s continued efforts to produce more devices outside China. Bloomberg said Wednesday.
As relations between China and the United States deteriorate, Apple has worked to diversify its supply chain by expanding production in countries such as Vietnam and India. It’s a major shift for the iPhone maker, which has historically relied on manufacturing in China.
The report said that about one-seventh (or 14%) of Apple’s iPhones are currently produced in India, which is twice the amount produced in India last year. According to the report, manufacturer Pegatron assembles about 17% of iPhones, while Foxconn produces about 67%. Wistron built the rest.
In June 2023, Apple CEO Cook and other technology executives met with Indian Prime Minister Modi at the White House. Cook told CNBC after the meeting that India represented a “huge opportunity.” Apple opened its first retail store in the country last year.
China remains an important market for Apple, but sales have gotten off to a rocky start this year. The company said Apple faces stiff competition from other smartphone vendors such as Huawei.
Apple declined to comment.
