Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant said on Thursday that Israel would respond directly to any Iranian attack.
“A direct attack by Iran would require an appropriate Israeli response to Iran,” Galante told U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, according to remarks released by his office.
The Pentagon said the two discussed the United States’ “ironclad” commitment to Israel’s security from threats from Iran and its proxies.
The Pentagon said: “In response to President Biden’s clear message to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Secretary Austin assured Secretary Galante that Israel can rely on the full support of the United States to defend Israel from an attack by Iran, which Tehran has publicly stated Threats of attack from Iran.”
The statement added that a visit to Israel by General Michael “Eric” Kurila, the top US general for Middle East affairs, had been brought forward so that he could meet with Israeli military leaders and discuss “current security threats.” Kurila has traveled regularly to Israel in recent months.
