Former Longtime General Counsel Moody’s Federal prosecutors in New Jersey said Friday he admitted to knowingly failing to file federal income tax returns.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office in New Jersey said John Goggins, who resigned as Moody’s senior vice president and general counsel last fall, earned $54 million between 2018 and 2021 but failed to pay during those years. Ability to file federal income taxes.
Goggins pleaded guilty Thursday before a federal magistrate judge in Newark, New Jersey, prosecutors said. He is expected to be sentenced on September 6.
“Mr. Goggins deeply regrets and takes full responsibility for his failure to file certain personal income tax returns,” Goggins’ attorney, Christopher Ferguson, said in a statement. Dee’s job has nothing to do with it.”
Goggins retired from Moody’s in September after more than two decades on the job, and was replaced by Richard Steele as general counsel. A Moody’s spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ferguson said Goggins has paid $3.2 million in unpaid taxes, interest and penalties related to his misdemeanor “and looks forward to putting this situation behind him.”
