TikTok began automatically labeling videos and images created with artificial intelligence, the company said Thursday.

AI-generated content on the app will now be tagged with “Content Credentials,” a form of Content Source and Authenticity AllianceTikTok said in a press release.

“Content credentials attach metadata to content that we can use to instantly identify and tag (artificial intelligence-generated content),” TikTok said. “This feature is starting to roll out on images and videos today and will be rolling out soon Audio-only content.”

TikTok already labels content produced using its in-app artificial intelligence effects and requires creators to label any content they produce that contains real-life artificial intelligence. This latest initiative will extend automatic tagging to AI-generated content uploaded from other platforms.

The update comes as lawmakers and experts warn that artificial intelligence could pose a threat to the upcoming 2024 election, fearing a rise in deepfakes and misinformation.

TikTok also announced that it will join the Content Authenticity Initiative adobeLeads a group dedicated to establishing standards that make digital production of images, video or audio clips transparent and traceable across the industry.

In February, TikTok became one of 20 leading technology companies committed to combating artificial intelligence misinformation during this year’s election cycle. Microsoft, Yuan, Google, Amazon OpenAI also signed the agreement.

TikTok’s future in the United States is uncertain after President Joe Biden signed legislation in April that gave parent company ByteDance nine months to sell the app or face a U.S. ban. TikTok sued the U.S. government, saying the law violated the First Amendment.
