Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a third-party challenger to President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump in 2024, said Tuesday he has invested $24,000 in meme stocks game stationto express solidarity with retail investors against large institutional funds.

“My administration will support the Ape Retail Rebellion and implement aggressive Wall Street reforms,” Kennedy Jr. wrote in a social media post. “In order to walk the talk, I just invested $24,000 in GameStop.”

Calling themselves “apes” in an effort to flip Wall Street’s label of “dumb money” on their head, this group of retail investors helped spark explosive gains in shares of struggling video game retailer GameStop and movie theater chain AMC in 2021 .

Part of Ape’s motivation is a desire to overturn pessimistic assessments by Wall Street analysts about the company’s long-term prospects.

Last week, investors briefly revived the meme stock phenomenon after the “Roaring Kitty” that led the 2021 GameStop craze reappeared online for the first time in years.

Kennedy Jr. is aggressively appealing to undecided voters with a brand of fringe politics that may appeal to some anti-establishment meme stock investors.

Kennedy Jr. has made vague statements about his investment record. In July 2023, the candidate said he had no investments in Bitcoin, despite financial records showing he owned at least $100,000 worth of the cryptocurrency.

His campaign did not immediately respond to CNBC’s request to confirm the GameStop investment.

Hours after Kennedy’s post, Trump’s campaign announced it would now accept cryptocurrency donations, also appearing to be an effort to attract votes from investors opposed to the traditional financial system.

“Today’s announcement reflects President Trump’s commitment to an agenda that values freedom over socialist government control,” the Trump campaign said in a statement.
