LONDON – British Prime Minister Sunak called for a general election on July 4 on Wednesday after economic data showed inflation falling closer to the 2% target set by the Bank of England earlier in the day.

“Earlier today, I spoke to His Majesty the King and asked for the dissolution of Parliament. The King has approved this request and we will hold a general election on July 4.” Sunak told a press conference outside Downing Street.

Data from the Office for National Statistics showed that UK inflation fell to 2.3% in April earlier on Wednesday.
