twice pga tour champion Grayson Murray died on Saturday morning at the age of 30, one day after withdrawing from the Charles Schwab Cup Challenge at Colonial.
There are no details yet about the circumstances of his death, only shock and sadness pga tour and his management team.
“I’m speechless,” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said. “The PGA Tour is a family and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same again. We mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”
His management company, GSE Worldwide, confirmed the news and said it was heartbreaking.
“We will hold off on commenting until more details are known, but our hearts break out for his family, friends and all who loved him during this very difficult time,” the GSE said in a statement.
Monahan said he spoke with Murray’s parents to express his condolences and that they asked that the game in Fort Worth, Texas, go ahead.
He said grief counselors will be on hand at PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour events. Monahan said he was going to Texas.
Murray, who has dealt with alcohol and mental issues in the past, made a dramatic turnaround this year and won the Sony Open, hitting his wedge to 3 feet on the final hole for a birdie, entering a playoff and winning the playoff. The 40-footer won the tournament putt.
He also won the Barbasol Championship in 2017.
Murray, ranked 58th in the world, finished tied for 43rd at the PGA Championship at Valhalla last week. He also made the cut in his Masters debut, finishing 51st, and played in next month’s U.S. Open at Pinewood No. 2.
