Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov suggested on Thursday that China could hold peace talks to resolve the Ukraine crisis and praised Beijing’s “constructive approach”.
“We agree with (China’s) position that we must first resolve the root causes and protect the legitimate interests of all parties,” Lavrov said in an interview with the Russia Today media group, according to comments published by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website.
His comments came shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged U.S. President Joe Biden to attend a peace summit in Switzerland in mid-June. Russia has repeatedly stated that it will not attend the meeting.
At the same time, Zelensky thanked Sweden for donating a military support program worth 13 billion crowns ($1.2 billion).
“Today we thank Sweden for providing our fighters with a very important new military plan,” Zelensky said in his daily evening address on Wednesday.
He added: “We are doing our best to make our air defense systems more effective and Sweden is providing Ukraine with special radar surveillance aircraft; armored vehicles and ammunition are also part of the plan.”
