Former President Donald Trump angrily denounced his hush-money criminal trial in rambling remarks on Friday, a day after a New York jury convicted him of 34 felony counts of falsifying business records.
Trump called the case “grossly unfair,” recalling his many previous criticisms of Manhattan Supreme Court Presiding Judge Juan Merchant, prosecutors, witnesses and the charges.
“These are bad people,” Trump told reporters at Trump Tower.
“This cannot be allowed to happen to other presidents,” he said. “This should never be allowed to happen in the future, but it is well beyond my capabilities.
“This is bigger than Trump, this is bigger than me, this is bigger than my presidency.”
The Republican presidential candidate spoke for about 33 minutes and then left without answering questions.
A 12-member jury found Trump guilty on all charges Thursday afternoon in the case brought by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
The case involves business records related to a scheme to cover up a $130,000 hush-money payment made by Trump’s then-personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen to porn star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. It was to keep her silent about an alleged one-night stand of sex.
