Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared victory in the country’s election late on Tuesday, although his party looked set to lose its outright majority, leaving him dependent on smaller regional parties.
Ongoing vote counting suggests Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may win just 239 seats – down from 303 seats in 2019 – and must seek a power-sharing deal to secure a historic third term .
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) looks set to win a total of 294 parliamentary seats local media. At least 272 seats are needed to form a government.
“People are confident about the NDA for the third time in a row! This is a historic feat in the history of India,” Modi said on X as the counting of votes was coming to an end.
According to the Associated Press, he later delivered a speech at the Delhi headquarters of the Bharatiya Janata Party, saying that “today’s victory is a victory for the largest democracy in the world.”
Modi reportedly March said he was confident the NDA would get more than 400 seats.
Modi reportedly told the crowd that he would boost India’s defense production, create jobs for its youth and increase exports. “This country will usher in a new chapter of big decisions. This is Modi’s guarantee,” he said, according to the Associated Press.
