President Joe Biden will speak at convention white house On Tuesday, he signed a new executive order tightening asylum restrictions at the U.S.-Mexico border.
The executive order temporarily bars undocumented immigrants from receiving asylum when the number of immigrants crossing the border exceeds a certain threshold (an average of more than 2,500 per day for seven consecutive days). Given the current volume of migrant crossings, which DHS officials estimate at 4,000 per day, the action is expected to take effect immediately.
Biden’s new measures come after months of mounting political pressure, which has become a burden for some voters as a November rematch with former President Donald Trump approaches. The measure is likely to draw the ire of some of Biden’s left-wing supporters and humanitarian groups.
The executive order could also have an economic impact by tightening labor market growth and potentially unblocking U.S.-Mexico supply chains.
