Eighty years ago, during World War II, Allied forces attacked the beaches of Normandy, France on D-Day. This sudden invasion ultimately led to the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe and ended the war just over a year later.

In the past few days, heads of state from around the world have traveled to France to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landing.

U.S. President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and Britain’s King Charles III attended a U.S. ceremony Thursday at the Colleville-sur-Mer American Cemetery and Cenotaph in France, along with other luminaries including “Private Rain” star Tom Hanks and director Stevenson Spielberg. The ceremony included speeches, a 21-gun salute, a flyover and Bugle call tap playing.

About 150 U.S. veterans People involved in the landing are also expected to attend the ceremony. Robert “Al” Persichitti, a U.S. Army veteran from New York died on the way Go to the memorial service. He is 102 years old.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prince William also attended a separate Canadian commemoration ceremony near the village of Courtelles-sur-Mer in northwestern France.
