Artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize health and wellness, but there are some issues that need to be addressed first.
This was the message conveyed in the East-West roundtable dialogue on technology at the Viva technology conference in Paris.
Alibaba Group President of Strategic Development Chris Tung and FemHealth Insights CEO Brittany Barrett join CNBC’s senior technology reporter Arjun Kharpal to discuss the promise and limitations of artificial intelligence.
“We can indeed cure breast cancer using artificial intelligence,” Barrett said, referring to an algorithm that can predict a woman’s risk of breast cancer within five years.
“A radiologist came back and said, ‘She doesn’t have breast cancer. She’s healthy.’ I think she’s going to get breast cancer in the next two to three years,” AI said. ” This is a game changer because if you catch breast cancer in the first stage, it is curable.
Tung shared similar developments in China, where artificial intelligence is helping to speed up the diagnostic process.
“We (Alibaba) support three hospitals in Hangzhou to allow doctors to diagnose potential tumor problems through CT scans, and we found that the machine only takes three seconds on average to diagnose. So we can actually save doctors’ time in more detail Look at something else.
However, Tong said the biggest opportunities for artificial intelligence will come from personalization.
“Everyone is equal, but created differently. Whether it’s physical health or mental health, everyone has their own unique needs that need to be taken care of. If we only focus on general intelligence, that’s capacity building, not capacity building.” Caring for individuals , “He said.
Barrett and Tong believe that, unfortunately, data bias hinders the creation of true personalization.
“In order for us to truly create personalization, we need to incorporate sex and gender into our algorithms,” Barrett said.
“It’s important to have fair representation in the data set, not only from a gender perspective, but also across cultures, backgrounds, regions,” Tung added.
