OpenAI announced its newest board member on Thursday: Paul M. Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency. Nakasone is the longest-serving leader of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the Central Security Agency.
“Mr. Nakasone’s insights will also help OpenAI better understand how to use artificial intelligence to strengthen network security by quickly detecting and responding to network security threats,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
Nakasone will also join OpenAI’s recently formed safety and security committee, the company said. OpenAI said the committee will spend 90 days evaluating the company’s processes and safeguards before making recommendations to the board and ultimately updating the public.
Nakasone joins current board members Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor and Sam Altman, as well as a number of new board members announced by the company in March: Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Nicole Seligman, former executive vice president and global general counsel of Sony; and Fidji Simo, CEO and chairman of Instacart.
