OpenAI announced its newest board member on Thursday: Paul M. Nakasone, a retired U.S. Army general and former director of the National Security Agency. Nakasone is the longest-serving leader of U.S. Cyber Command and director of the Central Security Agency.

“Mr. Nakasone’s insights will also help OpenAI better understand how to use artificial intelligence to strengthen network security by quickly detecting and responding to network security threats,” OpenAI said in a blog post.

Nakasone will also join OpenAI’s recently formed safety and security committee, the company said. OpenAI said the committee will spend 90 days evaluating the company’s processes and safeguards before making recommendations to the board and ultimately updating the public.

Nakasone joins current board members Adam D’Angelo, Larry Summers, Bret Taylor and Sam Altman, as well as a number of new board members announced by the company in March: Dr. Sue Desmond-Hellmann, former CEO of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; Nicole Seligman, former executive vice president and global general counsel of Sony; and Fidji Simo, CEO and chairman of Instacart.

OpenAI is strengthening its board of directors and team of senior executives as large language patterns become increasingly important across the tech landscape and competition in the emerging generative artificial intelligence market rapidly intensifies. Although the company has been in high-growth mode since launching ChatGPT in late 2022, OpenAI has also been plagued by controversy and high-level employee departures.

OpenAI on Monday announced the hiring of two executives and a partnership with Apple that includes a ChatGPT-Siri integration.

The company said former Nextdoor CEO and Square CFO Sarah Friar will join as chief financial officer. OpenAI said Friar will “lead a finance team that supports our mission through continued investment in our core research capabilities and ensures we can scale to meet our growing customer base and the complex global environment in which we operate.” need”.written in a blog post.

OpenAI also hired former Planet Labs president Kevin Weil as its new chief product officer. Weill previously served as senior vice president at Twitter and vice president at Facebook and Instagram. Weil’s product team will focus on “applying our research to products and services that benefit consumers, developers and businesses,” the company wrote.
