Millions of British citizens from England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland voted on Thursday to elect their local representatives to the British House of Commons.

In typical British fashion, the weather was changeable and unusually cool during the UK’s first July general election since 1945.

The UK elects 650 members of Parliament, called MPs. By long-standing convention, the prime minister is an MP appointed by the monarch who can “enjoy the confidence” of the House of Commons – in effect, he is the leader of the party with the most seats.

In the future, MPs will stand for election in one of the UK’s 650 constituencies. In a system known as first-past-the-post, voters can choose only one candidate from local lists, and the person with the most votes in each constituency becomes the MP.

Unlike other voting systems, there is no second round and no ranking of first- and second-choice candidates, meaning it is difficult for smaller parties to convert more popular votes into parliamentary seats.
