LONDON – Preliminary data released by the Office for National Statistics on Thursday showed that the British economy grew by 0.4% in May.
The figure was higher than a 0.2% expansion forecast in a Reuters poll of economists.
The UK economy emerged from a shallow recession in the first quarter of the year before leveling off in April.
In May, the country’s leading service industry continued to grow by 0.3%.
Goldman Sachs last week raised its growth forecast for Britain after the centre-left Labor Party secured a landslide victory in the UK general election.
